Planning to get married? Well, rather than getting your kundalis matched, we suggest you go the Japanese way and get your compatibility measured by your blood groups! The Japanese concept of matching personality traits with blood type, referred to as Cketsu-eki-gata, is now the next big thing when it comes to arranged marriages.

Says astrologer Amit Kundaliya, "While blood groups lend insight into character and compatibility, the janampatris help us know when and where a person could find the right match."
Adds astrologer Bejan Daruwala, "Fortunetellers in Japan base their reading of a person on his/her astrological sign as well as blood group. Now, India is trying its hand at Cketsu-eki-gata."
But how does this work? "To fully determine blood compatibility, it is necessary to cross-match samples. However, compatibility is largely determined by the blood type, and if that is compatible, then the risk of breaking up with a noncross-matched blood is less than one per cent," states Rakesh Tiwari who heads matrimonials website.s
However, science does not support the principle of matching blood group with personality traits. As medical practitioner Anirudh Chugh tells us, "An individual's personality is formed by a both genetic and environmental influence and while the blood group is genetically determined, any influence on the personality must necessarily be very small."

If not personality trait there are other valid reasons for which blood tests can be conducted feels Prabir Gupta, a retired bureaucrat, who has launched an NGO to create awareness on the issue. "We counsel to-be brides and grooms to check for blood related diseases that might have an impact on their marriage later," said Gupta.
Tarit Chakraborty, president, Bengal Network Of Positive People Living With HIV/AIDS said that they are also going to campaign so that people can be more cautious apart from HIV.
Dr Prabhakar Chatterjee, state director, health service said that they are regularly trying to make people aware about the genetic disease and how it can be checked through conducting blood tests before marriage.
"We are yet to evaluate the awareness generated from campaigns, but more and more people are coming for blood check ups before marriage. This will certainly help to prevent spread of HIV, thalassaemia and even Downs syndrome."
